Dyker Heights Christmas Lights
Christmas is right around the corner, and Christmas decorations are slowly invading New York City. But there is one neighborhood with more decorations per square foot than any other place, which is Dyker Heights.
Their Christmas decorations are known throughout the city to be the brightest, the biggest, and the most densely situated.
In Dyker Heights, you can find any decoration you could possibly think of: live-sized Santas, Reindeer, sleighs, snowmen, Christmas trees, and millions of lights. Every house is trying to show off its best decorations! And imagine what the electricity bills for each one of the houses look like! According to the Bowery Boys podcast, some families spend $5.000 - $8.000 per month to illuminate their homes and turn them into a Christmas fairytale.
Of course, such effort can not go unnoticed. Dyker Heights attracts tourists and NYC residents every year. The neighborhood never stays quiet during the holiday season.
To be sure that all the decorations are up and see the best of Dyker Heights, plan your visit for the middle to the end of December. That way, all the houses will have the ornaments up. The decorations usually stay until the end of the first week of January, so if you cannot see Dyker Heights before Christmas, you can do it after.
One piece of advice - stay respectful of the neighborhood and the privacy of its residents. It’s a very family-oriented neighborhood, so don’t come close to the houses, yell, or litter. Just enjoy the lights, and let others enjoy them with you!
