150 and counting: Kentucky Derby, not just a horse race150 and counting: Kentucky Derby, not just a horse race150 and counting: Kentucky Derby, not just a horse race
The historic and iconic horseback riding competition celebrates its 150th anniversary
In the realm of horse racing, few events command the attention and reverence of the Kentucky Derby. This iconic race, part of the esteemed Triple Crown series, has been the epitome of elegance, excitement, and excellence for a century and a half. As we mark the 150th anniversary of this legendary event, we delve into the rich tapestry of tradition, competition, and celebration that defines the Kentucky Derby.
The Triple Crown Tradition

Since its inception, only thirteen horses have achieved this remarkable feat, cementing their place in racing history.
The Kentucky Derby: A Run for the Roses
At the heart of the Triple Crown lies the Kentucky Derby, fondly known as the "Run for the Roses." Held annually on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, this illustrious race captivates audiences worldwide with its blend of athleticism and pageantry. From the stirring rendition of "My Old Kentucky Home" to the blanket of red roses adorning the winner, every facet of the Derby exudes tradition and grandeur.
The Tradition of Watch Parties
Beyond the hallowed grounds of Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby inspires a nationwide celebration. Watch parties spring up across the country, where enthusiasts don their most vibrant suits and dresses, adorned with original and peculiar hats reminiscent of Derby fashion. Amidst the revelry, attendees sip the iconic mint julep, a refreshing concoction synonymous with Derby day.
Challenges and Intrigue of the Race
While the Kentucky Derby is steeped in tradition, each year brings its own set of challenges and surprises. The grueling 1.25-mile race demands speed, agility, and strategy from both horse and rider, while the unpredictable nature of the sport ensures that no victory is guaranteed. This year, horses favored to claim the coveted garland of roses include 'Sierra Leone' and 'Fierceness,' with potential dark horses such as 'Track Phantom,' 'T O Password,' 'Dornoch,' and 'Just a Touch' adding an element of unpredictability to the competition.
Unique Venue and Star-Studded Attendees
One of the hallmarks of the Kentucky Derby is its historic venue, Churchill Downs. Nestled in the heart of Louisville, Kentucky, this iconic racetrack serves as the backdrop for countless moments of triumph and triumph. Moreover, the Derby attracts a star-studded roster of celebrities who flock to the event, adding an extra layer of glamour and excitement to the proceedings. From Hollywood A-listers to sports icons, the Derby is a magnet for the rich and famous.
Celebrating Across the Nation
While the main event unfolds in Louisville, the spirit of the Kentucky Derby resonates far and wide. Nowhere is this more evident than in New York City, where rooftop, gardens, and terraces play host to extravagant watch parties. Against the backdrop of the city skyline, revelers showcase their finest attire, complete with elaborate hats that rival those seen at Churchill Downs. As glasses clink and laughter fills the air, attendees toast to the enduring legacy of the Kentucky Derby, savoring every sip of their mint juleps, Moscow mules, and mimosas.
To the next 150 years!
In its 150th year, the Kentucky Derby continues to captivate and inspire, standing as a testament to the enduring spirit of competition and camaraderie. As horses thunder down the homestretch and crowds roar with excitement, the essence of the Derby transcends mere sport, becoming a celebration of tradition, elegance, and the pursuit of excellence. So, whether you find yourself at Churchill Downs or among the skyscrapers of New York City, raise a glass to the storied history and bright future of the Run for the Roses.

Macy’s Parade on Thanksgiving Day remains a city favorite in 2022
New and Classic floats and balloons delighted the ecstatic crowd, who could cheer for music stars Sean Paul and Ziggy Marley, Late Night Show crew Jimmy Fallon and the Roots, before welcoming Santa Claus himself!
NEW YORK, NY – November 24th, 2022
On a brisk, beautiful, and sunny morning in November, the 2022 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade took place along the usual route, starting in the Upper West Side at 72nd Street, down Amsterdam Avenue through Columbus Circle and 6th Avenue, ending up on 34th Street at Macy's main entrance.
Families, friends, and waves of New Yorkers and visitors filled the streets and the rises along the parade path. A cheerful crowd, excited to see the classic floats and balloons together with the newest beloved favorites, climbed the fences to high-five performers and talents who would run to them and hype them up!
Kids got super excited when they could cheer for Goku, Snoopy, Red Titan, Bluey, SpongeBob SquarePants, the Minions, and the crew from Pawn Patrol.
Timeless classics made their appearance as well: Ronald McDonald, Snoopy, Smokey the Bear, Grandpa Smurf, and Sesame Street.
Another great tradition of the event is hosting school bands from across the country: this year, there were performers from South Dakota, Texas, Florida, and Indiana. Colorful uniforms, shiny instruments, spinning flags, and - above all - catchy tunes and evergreen melodies.
Honorary presence for the City of New York was made by the Department of Sanitation, the NYPD with its horsed unit, and the Park Rangers.
The Parade was charmed away by the beauty of Miss America 2022 Emma Broyles, who towered over the crowd from the top of Spirit of America Production’s float.
Colorful and richly decorated floats were presented this year by Sinclair Oil Company, media companies Hallmark Channel, Peacock Streaming Service, Lifetime, and Netflix featuring the show ‘Slumberland,’ together with Kinder Chocolate, LEGO, the Louisiana Tourism Office and its giant alligator float, and - of course - 'Wish,' the Disney's boat with Mickey and Minnie, Goofy and Pluto, Cinderella and the Prince, Elsa and Kristoff.
Global Celebrities such as Sean Paul and Ziggy Marley made their appearance as testimonials, respectively, for Kalahari Resorts and Baby Shark. But, judging from the noise coming from the crowd, the absolute favorite was the float with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots, the special guests of this edition.
Great energy pervaded the streets of the Big Apple, with people showing up even from balconies and rooftops.
And, of course, the biggest star of the show was Santa Claus, who came along with his sleight, reins, and elves to close the parade.
This was an electrifying edition, and it was great to see the City celebrating again all together the most heartwarming and meaningful holiday in America.
See you next year, and Happy Thanksgiving.

Pin-Ups at Fleet Week 2022
Fleet Week is coming back to New York City! After two years of virtual celebrations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will finally be hosted in-person from May 25 to May 31.
Fleet Week has been celebrated in New York annually since 1988. During the event, Marines, Coast Guardians, and Sailors have an opportunity to explore the city and citizens - to see what maritime services are capable of today.
The program for Fleet Week of 2022 turned out to be very impressive! Expect the parade of ships, Navy vs. Marine Corps Tug of War, which is an “annual fight for bragging rights,” ship tours, wreath-laying, and much more! This is definitely a great way to spend the last week of May.
By the way, to make the event even more exciting, why not dress up? Men can go with a sailor’s costume, and women can probably try one of the most famous styles - pin-up.
The Pin-ups trend was at its peak in popularity in the middle of the 20th century. Short skirts and tops, colorful dresses, elegant shoes, and playful poses of the models - all these are the attributes of pin-up.
The style got popular during World War II when the US army needed support and encouragement. Even though the posters with pin-up models might seem a little extravagant and over-sexualized, they were considered to be inspiring. The women in the picture were patriots sending good luck to the soldiers fighting for the country.
The posters with pin-up models included encouraging slogans, but the main focus was, of course, on models. They were a representation of a peaceful life, making soldiers stay strong, win the war and get home to their wives as soon as they could.
So why not remember this exciting chapter of 20th-century fashion and remind everyone about it?
Wearing a vintage pin-up costume for Fleet Week will definitely make you stand out! And what can be a better event to try out a pin-up look than Fleet Week? Especially now, when fashion is so diverse and inclusive.
And, of course, there are ways to play with the style. Shorts and a top or a dress, heels or flats, ponytail or loose hair - you can always find what works better for you.
Don’t miss the opportunity to have fun and learn something new! Join Fleet Week and make pin-ups a part of the fun!

LeCoqtail
Quality Cocktails. Everywhere.
New York
I am not a big alcohol fan, but I know that a good quality cocktail once in a while is always nice. That is when I found the LeCoqtail. It’s a new ready-to-drink cocktail brand that sells Old Fashioned and Manhattan whiskey cocktails.
I was fascinated by how aesthetically thought-through the company is and how well it positions itself, and I wanted to find out more. So I contacted Andy Irukulla, Chief Mixologist Officer of LeCoqtail, to talk more about his brand and find out about his journey of creating a company.
The idea of creating his brand started coming to Andy when he worked for a big international company that required him to travel to different countries. No matter where he went, it was impossible to find a good quality drink without spending a fortune on it, “... even in restaurants, or hotels, or airports, I wasn’t getting the right cocktail every time I went.”
Loving to cook, Andy went to culinary school. After finishing it, he realized that if there weren’t any good cocktails around, he could make a craft consistently high-quality drink himself with all the knowledge he had. And this is how his journey started.
He wanted to make a good quality cocktail that people could drink anywhere: on the beach, at a party, or in a bar. That’s why all of the cocktails come in a small jar with a shape similar to a whiskey glass. Open the lid, add the ice - and you are all set.
Another important aspect was to make the brand eco-friendly. That’s why the jars are made of glass, and bigger containers with drinks are fully recyclable. “We are an environmentally friendly and a user-friendly product….”
Cocktails had to be affordable but made of good ingredients and smooth. So, Andy crafted all the cocktails by himself, choosing the best whiskey, making vermouth, and checking the formula, and the taste was perfect. Talking about the Manhattan cocktail, Andy said, “I create the vermouth first, and then we also make our own bitters, and we mix them together.”
Then came the branding. It had to be something easy to remember and, at the same time, different from others: LeCoqtail. Easy to say and remember, the name with a touch of Parisian chic was approved.
The logo, a rooster in a bartender suit, was also not just a nice picture. It was making a statement: everyone can be a bartender, and you can be your own bartender with these cocktails.
Next year, Andy plans to add two more cocktails: Tequila Margaritas and Dirty Martini with vodka. According to his research, these flavors are getting more and more popular with customers all over the United States.
Andy is now working on advertising to let even more people know about his company. LeCoqtail has already been able to work with various brands and influencers. For example, it recently collaborated with Porsche USA on its new model presentation, and Andy is not planning on stopping. The next goal is to get recognized in every US State and, shortly after, get international recognition, primarily n Asian and European markets.
Having only been on the market for about a year, LeCoqtail is already becoming more popular than Andy ever expected in such a short period of time, and this is just the start!
With summertime fastly approaching, don’t miss the opportunity and try out LeCoqtail yourself!
Cheers!

Gear Up and Go Out!
By Olivia Humer
One of the perfect outdoor activities for the fall season: hiking. A great way to get outside and enjoy the fall foliage wherever you are! If you’re new to hiking like I am, you may be wondering what it is that you need to be fully prepared for a day of hiking. After researching for the perfect list of hiking necessities, I will share my findings with you!
The ultimate necessity for a long hike is a good pair of hiking boots. It is best to find a pair of boots that fit snug, not tight, and give you a little bit of room for thick socks in the colder temperatures. It is also important that the boots are waterproof and warm as well as comfortable.
The next item you need for a good hike is a hiking backpack filled with snacks and water! You don’t want to get caught on a longer trail than expected without some trail mix to fuel you to the end! It can depend on what type of hiking you are looking to do to find the best backpack, ranging from a small and compact backpack to a larger daypack. The last essential items to keep in mind are weather-appropriate clothing. You’ll want to make sure that your clothing is warm, waterproof, and durable so that your main focus is enjoying the beautiful scenery and not trying to find the fastest route home because you’re shivering! So, gather your gear and enjoy yourself outside at your nearest hiking trail!
Put on the mask! It’s Halloween
By Bailey Roulo
It is no surprise that Halloween is going to be very different this year with all of the precautions that are being taken because of COVID-19, but this doesn’t mean it can’t be just as fun. It will be easier for the trick or treaters to keep their distance while collecting all kinds of candy, but Halloween parties will be reduced to Zoom calls or smaller groups. The good thing about all of this, though, is that masks can be a great addition to a costume. A popular costume every year, the skeleton mask will help elevate the costume while keeping those around you safe and COVID free!
Many people rely on makeup every year to create the final touch on a costume, but this year masks can be used for that last piece of a costume.
Animal print costumes are an easy but cute outfit that many people wear every year, and a mask that matches would complete the look.
Imitating celebrities always seem to be a go-to for many people so consider buying a mask with the celebrities face on it for an exciting costume! If you are looking for a simple approach to a mask as not to distract from the costume, a simple plain mask is a great choice or one that sparkles to help make you shine. If you are staying in and passing out candy, masks with ghosts or bats are perfect to have to help create the Halloween spirit without having to dress up. If you are someone who likes to give others a frightful scare, look no further than a mask of your favorite horror movie villains like Jason with his iconic hockey mask or Michael Myers with his mask. Those masks can easily be placed over a simple medical mask making sure that the only scary thing this Halloween is the jump scares. Although sacrifices are being made to make sure everyone is safe this Halloween, it is easy to cover up while still enjoying the endless piles of candy and scary movies.
Go Vote!
By Olivia Humer
In the tumultuous year we have all been experiencing, it can be hard to think about all of the issues we are facing. Between your family’s health, keeping your job, and the state of our country among other difficulties, it can be overwhelming. But, a reminder that you have a say in what happens is your right to vote. Expressing your views and opinions by exercising your right to vote is something we should be proud of.
This year especially, we have seen the passion and motivation in our country through countless protests. Speaking out through a protest has motivated the rest of the country to also act on their beliefs and make their voices heard through voting. Seeing the amount of voter turnout already through early and mail-in voting is encouraging to know that our voices will be heard. So, take some time to research your local, state, and federal politicians and exercise your right to vote! Make your voice heard and help make decisions for a better future of our country and your family.
The Changing Season
By Olivia Humer
The upcoming transition into the colder and cozier time of autumn is something to be excited about this year. With everyone’s world turned upside down in 2020, some fun outdoor activities in fall spirit are something we can all enjoy. The beautiful change in foliage offers amazing scenery for outdoor hikes and Halloween activities. Haunted houses, hayrides, pumpkin, and apple picking are all engaging outdoor activities to enjoy the fall foliage. In the city, or in a suburb the fall foliage can be enjoyed anywhere. A beautiful fall drive through more remote areas is another way to take in all the season has to offer. Whether you are an adult or a kid, the fall season is enjoyable for just about everyone!
The infamous pumpkin spice latte is another great perk of the fall season. Whether it’s from your local coffee shop, Starbucks, or made at home the pumpkin flavors can make us all reminisce on cozy fall days. The nostalgia around the holiday season makes everything that much cozier and enjoyable when filled with good memories. Enjoying fall activities in a cute and cozy fall outfit is all the more fun! With thick sweaters, hats, etc. the changing season becomes enjoyable outside when you don’t need that down feather coat just yet!
September, sweet melancholy
By Bailey Roulo
Summer is coming to a close, and September is slowly transitioning into fall. This month is the perfect time to mix summer and fall styles to make a cozy yet breezy outfit. A long top and short skirt paired with comfy socks and a pair of sneakers or boots, or a short sleeve shirt with a pair of jeans or a long skirt are the perfect choices for the slight change in the temperature that comes during September. The days are warm, and the sun is still shining, but a simple sweater or jacket is necessary when nighttime comes around. The bright colors of summer start to disappear and are replaced with lighter versions of summer shades. The bright pink has turned into a rosé pink, and the orange and yellow that was so prominent in the past few months are starting to transition into more earth tones. Blues begin to come into play as a good transition from the bright and bustling nature that summer brings to the calmer and cooler weather of fall without fully committing to the change in seasons.
Long dresses with a simple heel or jeans with about any top that can accommodate a sweatshirt or light jacket are also perfect for this time of the year. The chaotic nature of this year has caused quite a bit of change in everyone’s lives. The passage from this unexpected and unusual summer is desperately needed by many people. Sitting around a campfire or curled up under the covers with friends and family is the comfort that many people are looking forward to. Although it may look different this year than it has in the past, the idea of unity and relationships are enough to make anyone excited for September and the change it brings. Find your best pair of pants, your favorite shirt, and a simple jacket and embrace the change that will come in the current month.
The Indiana Lifestyle
Article and pictures by Bailey Roulo @bailey.hope_
With bars, restaurants, and every other type of social gathering being canceled and shut down this year, people turned the outdoors for a sense of comfort and freedom. You can only be cooped up in your apartment or house for so long before you start to lose your sanity.
After half a year of people working from home and trying not to lose their minds, people are finding the hidden gems of their towns and exploring them as a way to keep themselves entertained and active.
Living in Indiana my whole life, I thought the only thing it could provide me was cornfields and late-night adventures to the closest supermarket.
I was surprised when I moved to southern Indiana and found that Indiana is quite beautiful.
There are still plenty of cornfields but there are hidden spots everywhere. Indiana continues to surprise me with its beauty. A popular destination for people in southern Indiana is the Hickory Ridge Fire Tower.
It is 110 feet tall and it gives a perfect view of the forest that seems to continue on forever. When fall comes around and the trees are all different colors, it is one of the incredible views to behold.
One of the best-hidden gems of Indiana is Turkey Run State Park. Located near the Indiana/Illinois border, this has many different trails to choose from. Many people do not realize that glaciers shaped quite a bit of the midwest and this is put on display at Turkey Run.
The canyons were carved out millions of years ago by the deteriorating glaciers and it makes you feel like you have traveled to a completely different part of the United States.
Indiana is known for its corn and being almost completely flat. These trails provide for a stunning and surprising hike with beautiful views at every turn for those who think the only thing Indiana has to offer is corn and more corn.
It is a perfect place that transports you away from the craziness of the world and provides you with a relaxing atmosphere which is needed by many people right now.

Boston Harbor
Boston Harbor is a natural harbor and estuary of Massachusetts Bay, and is located adjacent to the city of Boston, Massachusetts. It is home to the Port of Boston, a major shipping facility in the northeastern United States.
The inner harbor was historically the main port of Boston and is still the site of most of its port facilities as well as the Boston waterfront, which has been redeveloped for residential and recreational uses. The inner harbor is a great place. The inner harbor extends from the mouths of the Charles River and the Mystic River, both of which empty into the harbor, to Logan International Airport and Castle Island, the latter now connected by land in 1928 to Boston, where the inner harbor meets the outer harbor.
The outer harbor stretches to the south and east of the inner harbor. To its landward side, and moving in a counter-clockwise direction, the harbor is made up of the three small bays of Dorchester Bay, Quincy Bay and Hingham Bay. To seaward, the two deep water anchorages of President Roads and Nantasket Roads are separated by Long Island. The outer harbor is fed by several rivers, including the Neponset River, the Weymouth Fore River, the Weymouth Back River and the Weir River.
Dredged deepwater channels stretch from President Roads to the inner harbor, and from Nantasket Roads to the Weymouth Fore River and Hingham Bay via Hull Gut and West Gut. Some commercial port facilities are located in the Fore River area, an area which has a history of shipbuilding including the notable Fore River Shipyard
